Biography

In my work, I strive to communicate authentic human experiences captured at the height of the physical and emotional passion, EXPERIENCES depicting the Excalibur moment.

The goal of my recent work is to examine the intense physical and psychological relationship of man and horse through exploring and creating images from all venues of equestrian events. I record both men and women, and their horses engaged in intense action, composed with keen attention to both anatomical and psychological components.

Vonn Rosser, a native born Western artist, grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, during the glory days of route 66. Early life was spent absorbing the easy going western lifestyle of New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho and eventually California, currently home of her working studio and gallery. Brought up in an artistic family, formal art training began at a very early age and blended beautifully with country living surrounded by nature, horses, and dogs.

After completing high school in the San Francisco Bay area, Rosser began undergraduate art studies with a strong core program of traditional art at a private Bay Area college. After two years, in order to increase her exposure major metropolitan art communities, education was continued at the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating Cum Laude with a degree in Fine Arts. Post graduate studies were continued at California State University, Long Beach and at California State University, Hayward with a combined emphasis in painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Throughout this period Rosser was influenced by studying with highly accomplished artists, Master Printmaker Misch Kohn, Joan Binkoff, Richard Swift, John Anderson, Louis De Martino, and William Powell.

Vonn Rosser’s formal education was completed in 2001 with a Masters of Art Degree from California State University at San Bernardino, with a masters show titled “Ms. Conception”, a one person show combining mixed media works of art in drawing, painting, and steel sculpture.  The contemporary theme was an exploration of altered issues of sexual relationships, conception, birth and family.

The mixed media methods Rosser currently employs in numerous equestrian paintings were initiated during a commission of six bronze sculptures of athletes for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. These new methods, refinements of both sculptural and printmaking techniques, were improved and utilized on a majority of the Master’s show works.  Rosser creates freely, sensitive to the sense of touch and keen directive observation of the human figure. The completed paintings have an appealing natural earth pallet with a rich textural surface.

Four years ago, during her Master’s program, Vonn Rosser attended a Polo match for the first time.  Since the initial encounter with the sport of Polo, Rosser has been relentless in her passionate pursuit of creating art that focuses on capturing the intensity of the athleticism of rider and horse.  This newly discovered equestrian venue, in addition to a lifelong passion of Western equitation, American rodeo, and the thrill of traditional Thoroughbred horseracing has given Rosser an endless world of opportunities to record the incredible relationship between man and horse.

Horses are majestic creatures.  Capturing the moment in which a horse and human move in synchronized beauty defines the magnificence of perfect connection between human and animal. After years of studying and practice in this particular subject, Rosser has successfully refined the ability to create powerfully striking images.
