Traditional Artist Statement

The purpose of my work is to heighten the viewer’s awareness of the altered female condition. Contemporary woman has the power to decide whether to conceive and bear children or to make other life choices.  My work uses the running female figure as an icon to explore the fractured and frequently disjointed experience of woman in our hurried cyber-world.  Running is an instinctual reflex to the fight-or-flight response.  I attempt to capture the essential reasons for “The Run”, tapping into both the emotional and sociological reasons for this primitive response.  What are the emotions we feel as we run? What are we running from?  Are we seeking disembodiment, a sense of freeing ourselves from our physical existence? Are we running to achieve freedom from the traditional responsibility of fecundity?  Is it the unexplainable ties to our primitive ancestry driving us to run from our persecutors, our fears, our past, or our multifaceted contemporary lifestyle? I believe that, as we venture further and further into the future cyber-world, we will continue to run, run in a narcissistic sense as well as to run from the unavoidable depersonalization and possible extermination of the historical feminine identity.
